Painting with Apples

What You Need

1-2 apples

Paper plate

Red, yellow-green, and/or pink acrylic craft paint

2-4 forks

Red glitter, if desired

Large art paper

What You Do

  1. Before the craft, cover the work surface with paper or plastic.

  2. Slice the apple in half. Put the sharp knife away completely before showing children the supplies.

  3. Carefully push a fork or large craft stick into the outside of each apple half.

  4. On a paper plate, squeeze out red, yellow-green, and/or pink paint.

  5. Dip the apple into the paint, then press it onto art paper in a pretty pattern.

  6. If desired, sprinkle the stamped paint shapes with glitter.

  7. Slowly draw a lowercase letter a in the upper corner of the paper. Talk about the letter a and the short /ă/ sound. Think of other words that start with a: alligator, ant, ankle, astronaut, acrobat.

  8. Parent phonics tips: Many words that begin with the letter a carry the long /ā/ sound: apron, acorn. The technical reason for this is that if a syllable ends with a vowel, it usually has the long vowel sound. But English has many rule-breakers, especially with vowels. The letter a also has many blends that affect its sound, such as /air/ and /ar/ (airplane, arm, and art).
